[TABLEAU] Adding An Independent Field As A Reference Line

Adding an Independent Field as a Reference Line

A reference line unrelated to any of the fields currently in the view. This article gives you the steps in order to bring a unique field into your visualization, independent of the current view, by using the Level of Detail shelf.

Use the Level of Detail shelf

Step 1
You have your visualization, but you are missing a reference line for a field that is not recognized in the Reference Line dialog box. In the Measures pane, select the field you want to add and drag it to the Level of Detail shelf.

Step 2
Now that your field is on the Level of Detail shelf, it appears in the Reference Line dialog box. Click the Y axis and select Add Reference Line. In the Add Reference Line dialog box, under Line, in the Value list, select Shipping Cost.

Step 3
To make sure you distinguish this line as using a separate field, add a custom label like <Computation> <FieldName> <Value>

Now you are well on your way to creating complex independent fields as reference lines.
