[TABLEAU] Menu Reorganization

Menu Reorganization

Beginning with Tableau Desktop 7.0, the menu layout and several command names have been updated so that it is clearer the operations or tasks that are available for the different areas of your workbook and view, and improve access to commonly used commands such as formatting and maps. The menu changes are listed below.

File Menu

Although the commands in this menu have been left mostly unchanged, the command to publish to Tableau Public has moved to the Server menu.

The File menu includes the following changes:

  • Command from the Edit menu: Workbook Locale (formerly Edit Locale)
  • Commands removed from this menu:  Tableau Public, Export > Image, Export > Data, and Export >Crosstab to Excel

Data Menu

To make clearer which data source you are operating on, the Data menu now displays all the data sources for your workbook, with a check mark next to the active data source. Commands that once were assumed to be tied to the active data source are now organized into submenus underneath each data source. For example, when you want to take an extract or edit a data connection, first select the data source on the Data menu and then click on the command you want to perform.

The Data menu includes the following changes:

  • New commands : Replace Data Source, and Publish to Server - You can now publish a workbook as a data source directly to Tableau Server.  Use the “Publish to Server” command in this menu. For more information about publishing a workbook as a data source to Server, refer to the Online Help.
  • Commands removed from this menu :  Background Images, Background Maps, Gecoding, Auto Updates, and Run Update
  • Renamed commands :  Edit Connection (formerly Data Connection), Edit Tables (formerly Tables), Add to Saved Data Sources (formerly Export Connection)

Worksheet Menu

Worksheet is a new menu aimed to make worksheet specific commands contextually more discoverable. Many of the commands that comprise this menu come from the previous Edit and View menus. Typically, commands in this menu operate on areas directly outside of your view such as showing the title or summary cards.

The new Worksheet menu includes the following changes:

  • Commands from the Edit menu : New Worksheet, Actions, Copy, Clear, Tooltip, and Duplicate as a Crosstab
  • Commands from the View menu :  Show Title (formerly Title), Show Caption (formerly Caption), Show Summary (formerly Summary), Show Zoom Controls (formerly Zoom Controls), Show Cards (formerly Other Cards and Reset Cards), and Describe Sheet
  • Commands from the Data menu : Auto Updates, and Run Update

Dashboard

Dashboard is also a new menu aimed to make dashboard specific commands contextually more discoverable. Many commands that comprise this menu come from the previous Edit menu. As the menu name suggests, commands in this menu operate directly on your dashboard. For example, refer to this menu when you want to export a dashboard or access dashboard specific actions.

The new Dashboard menu includes the following changes:

  • Commands from the Edit menu : Copy Image, New Dashboard, Actions, and Clear
  • Commands from the Data menu : Auto Updates, and Run Update

Analysis

Commands that relate to examining your data have been consolidated into the updated Analysis menu. Many new of the commands in this menu come from the previous View and Table menus. Commands such as custom calculations, built-in statistic tools and aggregations, quick filters and dynamic parameters allow you to manipulate the view so that you can extract useful information from your data.

The Analysis menu includes the following changes:

  • New command : Special Values
  • Commands added from the View menu : Color Legend, Shape Legend, Size Legend, Quick Filters, and Parameters
  • Commands from the Table menu : Show Empty Rows, Show Empty Columns, Show Field Labels for Rows, Show Field Label for Columns, Show Mark Labels, Show Row Grand Totals ( formerly Row Grand Totals), Show Column Grand Totals (formerly Column Grand Totals), Add All Subtotals, Remove All Subtotals, Show All Hidden Data, Cycle Fields, Swap Rows and Columns, and Advanced (formerly Table Options)
  • Commands removed from this menu : Filter, Set Context, Clear Context, Sort, and Show Me!

Map

The Map menu was created to consolidate all the commands related directly with your map views into one location. For example, geocoding and showing the map legend commands are now accessible through this menu.

The new Map menu includes the following:

  • New command : Edit Locations – Although this command was available from the context menu of individual geocoded dimensions in the Data window, you now have a single point of access from the Map menu.
  • Commands from the Data menu : Background Maps and Geocoding
  • Commands from the View menu :  Show Map Legend (formerly Map Legend), Show Map Options

Format

The Format menu has been left mostly unchanged. However, the “Dashboard” command has moved to the Dashboard menu and formatting related commands that were once available from the previous Edit and Table menus are now accessible from this menu.

The Format menu includes the following changes:

  • Commands from the Edit menu : Copy Formatting and Paste Formatting
  • Commands no longer in this menu : Dashboard

Server

The Server menu includes the following changes:

  • Commands from the File menu : Tableau Public
